This album marked the first time Ayu took a significant hiatus from releasing albums. Conveniently, it was also when I took a break from listening to her. Don’t get me wrong, Ayu’s still my favorite artist, but sometimes things are better when you let them sit for a while.
In any case, I hadn’t paid any attention to the singles she’d released in the years leading up to Remember you, and it was an absolute surprise to turn on “Nonfiction” and discover a new favorite. I must have listened to it for hours and hours on repeat: this was a return to form, and just as catchy as her old classics. With how much I enjoyed it, you can imagine how excited I was for the album!
And I do enjoy Remember you, but I can’t help but feel that this is Ayu’s least cohesive album. Even to my untrained ear, it doesn’t feel like these songs came together at the same time. There’s a clear variety between them that isn’t present on some of her older albums. It’s not a bad thing, but it does mean that the overall result is somewhat uneven.
Regardless, Remember you is a very solid release, and one I very much liked. Now to put “Nonfiction” on repeat again…
